A Dog Named "Buddy"

Famous surgeon Bernie Siegel once said, “Want to learn how to love?  Get a dog.”
Everyone who has one knows their loyalty is above par, but my brother Eric, his wife Jennifer and son Sean have a white toy poodle that adores beyond even the usual canine devotion.

Although Buddy loves everyone in the family, he’s especially attached to my sister-in-law Jennifer.  When she sits, he jumps in her lap.  When she stands to go somewhere, Buddy follows.  He sleeps with her, eats with her and if she’s away too long, frets.

What makes Buddy’s devotion so poignant is that Jennifer has Multiple Sclerosis.  It’s hard for her to get out of the house.  Having a constant companion like Buddy is not only nice, but probably good medicine.  Studies show how animals sense pain and in kind, people with medical issues respond positively to their warm attentions.   Modern health care may have pills, but for Jennifer, Buddy’s devotion may be the best treatment of all.

How can so much love be in such a small package?
